The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has confirmed the arrest of 26 suspects linked to the brutal attack in Yelwata, Benue State, which claimed 47 lives and displaced thousands. Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the IGP said the arrests were part of a broader operation to bring those behind the massacre to justice.
The IGP revealed that although 28 suspects were initially detained, two were later cleared after being used to bait the actual masterminds. He added that efforts are ongoing to apprehend other suspects still at large, with intensified border patrols and a clampdown on illegal arms.
This breakthrough comes days after President Bola Tinubu, during his visit to Benue, gave a direct order to security agencies to track down those responsible for the killings. The IGP also confirmed that 22 other suspects arrested in Jos in connection to the murder of nine wedding guests will also be prosecuted.
Last week’s attack in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area, was reportedly carried out by armed herders. The area is known for its agricultural contributions and has been a hotspot for such violence.
Authorities say arraignment of the suspects will happen soon as investigations continue. The police chief reaffirmed the force’s commitment to tackling insecurity and ensuring justice for the victims.
