In a display of solidarity amid the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, members of the pro-Governor Siminalayi Fubara support group, Rivers Women Unite for SIM, paid a courtesy visit to Deputy Governor Professor Ngozi Nma Odu at her residence in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, May 7.
Led by Mrs. Sotonye Fulton, the delegation commended Professor Odu for her steadfast support of Governor Fubara during this challenging period. They lauded her humility, maternal leadership, and unwavering commitment to the administration. The group offered prayers for her continued strength, wisdom, and divine protection.
In response, Deputy Governor Odu expressed gratitude for the visit and encouraged the group to persist in advocating for peace, unity, and progress in the state. She reaffirmed her dedication to advancing women’s welfare and supporting initiatives that promote faith, family, and development. Odu also pledged her continued support for the group’s activities.
The visit concluded with the presentation of customized T-shirts, face caps, and wrappers to Professor Odu, symbolizing the group’s appreciation and solidarity. These items were contributions from various local government areas during the group’s inauguration events.
This visit comes in the wake of significant political upheaval in Rivers State. On March 17, the Rivers State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Odu, citing allegations of gross misconduct. Subsequently, on March 18, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state, suspending both officials and the state assembly for an initial period of six months, citing “intense political instability” that threatened national stability.
Despite these challenges, Deputy Governor Odu has consistently denied rumors of her resignation, emphasizing her commitment to her role and to Governor Fubara’s administration .
The support from Rivers Women Unite for SIM underscores the continued backing for the suspended administration from various grassroots organizations within the state.
