A promising student heading to sit for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) was tragically killed yesterday by a stray bullet in Ibadan. The incident, which occurred on Gbagi market road in the Egbeda Local Government Area, has sparked outrage and calls for justice.
The deceased student was reportedly on a motorcycle with his father and twin brother, en route to their examination center, when the tragedy unfolded. Eyewitnesses claim a police officer, allegedly in pursuit of a suspect, fired shots, one of which fatally struck the student.
“A police officer opened fire while chasing a fleeing vehicle. One of the bullets reportedly hit the student,” recounted Ajani, a source close to the incident. “The victim was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.”
Irate youths, demanding accountability, carried the student’s lifeless body to the state Secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan, urging Governor Seyi Makinde to intervene. The deceased has since been deposited at the Adeoyo Hospital morgue.
As of this report, authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. This tragic loss has cast a shadow over the ongoing WASSCE examinations and ignited a renewed conversation about police conduct.
