Caleb University Students Build App to Detect Fruit Ripeness, Tackle Food wastage

A group of students from Caleb University, Lagos, have created a mobile app that could revolutionize how fruits are sold and bought in Port Harcourt markets. The app, called “Valor,” uses artificial intelligence to assess fruit ripeness based on visual analysis.

In markets like Mile 1, Oil Mill, and Creek Road, vendors and buyers often rely on physical touch or guesswork to determine ripeness—leading to waste and customer dissatisfaction. With Valor, a simple photo can reveal whether a fruit is ready for sale or still needs time.

The developers hope to collaborate with local agricultural cooperatives and vendors to pilot the app in real market settings. If successful, this technology could reduce losses, build consumer trust, and improve profit margins for traders throughout the South-South.
