Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has reiterated his administration’s deep commitment to transforming the state’s tourism sector, aiming to harness its inherent advantages for sustainable economic growth.
Speaking passionately during the recent flag-off of the reconstruction of the long-neglected Ibom International Convention Centre and the 200-bedroom Ibom Hotels in Uyo, the governor emphasized that this ambitious initiative is a calculated move to prepare Akwa Ibom for a future thriving beyond crude oil.
According to a statement from the Government House Press Corps released on Sunday, Governor Eno, who previously chaired the State Hotels and Tourism Board, revealed that these projects, once completed, will form pivotal components of the state’s evolving tourism master plan, alongside the upcoming ARISE Resort.
“We are gathered here this afternoon in our determined effort to position Akwa Ibom State as the tourism hub of Nigeria,” Governor Eno declared.
He underscored that tourism is a foundational pillar of the ARISE Agenda, his administration’s core development blueprint. He highlighted the state’s unique assets, including the thriving Ibom Air, a world-class international airport poised for full operation soon, and a remarkably peaceful and culturally rich populace.
“With our ownership of Ibom Air, the ease of movement, our culinary excellence, and a united, hospitable people, Akwa Ibom stands at the cusp of tourism-driven growth,” Eno added, painting a vivid picture of the state’s potential.
Shedding light on other significant developments, the governor described the ARISE Resort as a forthcoming family-themed destination. This “marvel of human imagination” will boast a 9-hole golf course, serene artificial lakes, vibrant playgrounds, a spacious banquet hall, and luxurious chalets.
“Uyo, our beautiful capital city, is already the host city of choice for national conventions, seminars, and retreats. The completion of the hotel and convention centre will make our city a one-stop tourism haven,” he noted with optimism.
Finishing What Was Started
Addressing questions regarding the revival of projects that have lain dormant for over a decade, Governor Eno articulated his administration’s strategic focus: completing high-impact initiatives to prevent the waste of public resources already invested.
“I came not just to deepen peace and unity in my state, but to deploy my finisher’s anointing—especially on projects that have already consumed billions. I believe God wanted us to complete these projects and align them with modern tourism standards,” he stated.
He also extended appreciation to past administrations for their foresight, specifically commending Senate President Godswill Akpabio for initially conceiving these projects.
Lawmakers from the National Assembly, led by Senator Aniekan Bassey (Uyo Senatorial District), lauded Governor Eno for his inclusive leadership and unwavering commitment to development. They collectively pledged their support for his second-term bid.
Similarly, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong, praised the governor’s consistent focus on critical areas like infrastructure development, job creation, and the burgeoning tourism sector, emphasizing the significant economic value these completed projects will bring to Akwa Ibom.
