Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno Defects to APC in High-Profile Political Shift

In a major political development with nationwide implications, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Eno announced his defection on Friday at the Government House in Uyo, confirming weeks of speculation and signaling a strategic realignment of Akwa Ibom’s political trajectory.

“After completing the rounds of my consultation as your servant whom you have elected to serve, I have therefore decided to progressively move to the APC,” Eno declared. “This decision was made in the interest of the state and out of deep admiration and respect for President Bola Tinubu, and to provide the needed support for Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.”

According to the Governor, the move followed three months of extensive consultations with political stakeholders, religious leaders, and traditional rulers. He emphasized that his decision was neither impulsive nor politically weak, but rather a deliberate shift “from a position of strength” aimed at aligning Akwa Ibom with the federal government for better developmental benefits.

While expressing gratitude to the PDP for its past support, Governor Eno said it was “time to make a progressive move.” He further assured Akwa Ibom people that his commitment to their welfare remains firm, regardless of party lines.

The announcement was made in the presence of a powerful delegation of APC governors including:

Hope Uzodimma (Imo) – Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum

Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos)

Dapo Abiodun (Ogun)

Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi)

Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo)

Bassey Otu (Cross River)

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, awas also in attendance.

Political Implications

Governor Eno’s defection marks a significant shift in Akwa Ibom’s political landscape and could reshape alignments in the South-South region ahead of the 2027 general elections. It also bolsters the APC’s push to consolidate power in traditionally PDP strongholds.
