A giant of Nigerian football, Rufai was a cornerstone of the Super Eagles, playing a pivotal role in their 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph and representing Nigeria at two FIFA World Cups (1994 and 1998). Known for his agility, leadership, and fearless goalkeeping, he stood tall between the posts during one of the most successful eras in Nigerian football history.

Rufai made 65 appearances for Nigeria, serving as captain on several occasions and earning a reputation as one of Africa’s finest goalkeepers. Beyond his on-field exploits, he was a mentor and role model, helping shape the next generation of Nigerian goalkeepers.

Born in 1963, Rufai played club football in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain, where he became the first Nigerian goalkeeper to feature in La Liga with Deportivo La Coruña. He brought pride and visibility to Nigerian talent on the international stage.

As Nigeria bids farewell to a footballing legend, the Nigeria Football Federation and global football bodies are expected to hold tributes in his honour.
