In a landmark political shift, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has formally handed over the reins of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State to Governor Umo Eno. The handover, which took place during the first APC stakeholders’ meeting at the Banquet Hall of Government House in Uyo, signals what both leaders have described as a “merger” rather than a political defection.
Governor Eno, addressing stakeholders from across the state, called for collective acceptance of the move and encouraged members to embrace the new alliance with openness and mutual respect.
“This is a movement and a merger,” he said. “We must approach it with love, unity, and understanding. Sacrifices will be required on both sides.”
He emphasized the importance of inclusiveness and warned against setting up unnecessary barriers for new members. According to him, the overarching goal is the unity and progress of Akwa Ibom.
“Let’s be happy that Akwa Ibom is becoming united politically. We’re all better off for it,” he added, pledging to work closely with APC leadership at all levels.
Senate President Akpabio, in his remarks, described Governor Eno as a bridge-builder and visionary leader. He clarified that the Governor’s alignment with the APC should be seen as a “merger of purpose” rather than a takeover.
“Governor Eno is not here to be dominated or to dominate,” Akpabio said. “My role is to support and safeguard the interests of Akwa Ibom while building a legacy of peace and unity.”
He also announced a revision of the party’s slogan to better reflect its new priorities: integration, love, unity, and progress.
APC State Chairman, Obong Stephen Ntukekpo, praised Governor Eno’s leadership and affirmed the party’s full support for his administration. Other stakeholders, including the APC Woman Leader, Youth Leader, and grassroots coordinators, commended the Governor’s inclusive governance and ongoing empowerment programs.
The high-level meeting was attended by members of the State Executive Council, party executives, and key political actors—marking a pivotal moment in Akwa Ibom’s evolving political landscape.
