Drama in Rivers State: Supreme Court Nullifies Rivers State Local Government Election, Halts State Payments

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has delivered a landmark ruling affecting the Rivers State Government, sparking political tension across the state.

In a series of judgments on Thursday, the apex court nullified the local government council elections held in Rivers State, declaring the exercise illegal and invalid. This decision led to the sack of all local government officers elected during the controversial polls.

In another critical ruling, the Supreme Court directed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other financial institutions to stop payments to the Rivers State Government until Governor Siminalayi Fubara presents the state budget to the House of Assembly for proper legislative approval.

The judgment follows the ongoing political crisis between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, which has thrown the state’s political landscape into turmoil.

This ruling is expected to have significant implications on the governance of Rivers State, particularly in the administration of local councils and the management of state funds.
