D’Tigress Awarded $100,000 Each, National Honours After AfroBasket Victory

Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have been honoured by the Federal Government following their remarkable fifth consecutive AfroBasket Women’s Championship victory.

At a special reception in Abuja on Monday evening, hosted by First Lady Senator Remi Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, each player was awarded the prestigious national honour of the Order of the Niger (OON), alongside a house and a cash reward of $100,000. Members of the coaching crew, led by Rena Wakama, also received $50,000 each in recognition of their contributions.

This comes just days after the Super Falcons were similarly rewarded for their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title in Morocco.

D’Tigress clinched their seventh AfroBasket crown with a 78–64 win over Mali in the final. Despite a slow start, the Nigerian side bounced back in the second half, driven by standout performances from Amy Okonkwo, who scored 19 points, and Ezinne Kalu, who led the team with 20 points. Strong support also came from Promise Amukamara, Victoria Macaulay, and Musa.

With this victory, D’Tigress have extended their unbeaten run to 29 games since 2015, firmly establishing themselves as the most dominant force in African women’s basketball.
