The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. The decision comes as part of a broader week-long national mourning period announced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Announcing the holiday on behalf of the Federal Government, Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, said the declaration was approved by President Tinubu to allow Nigerians reflect on the life and legacy of the former leader.
In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Minister described President Buhari as a man of integrity who served the nation with dedication and remained committed to Nigeria’s unity and development.
“This public holiday offers Nigerians a moment to reflect on his leadership, values, and unwavering belief in a peaceful and united nation,” the statement read.
Nigerians are encouraged to observe the day in a spirit of patriotism and national cohesion in line with the ideals championed by the late president.
Meanwhile, national flags will remain at half-mast across the country throughout the seven-day mourning period, which commenced on Sunday, July 13.
The Federal Government also extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the late president, the people of Katsina State, and the entire nation, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
