Liverpool Star Diogo Jota and Brother Killed in Fiery Car Crash in Spain

The global football community is in mourning following the sudden and tragic death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his younger brother, Andre Jota, 26, in a fatal car accident in northern Spain.

The tragic crash happened in the early hours of Thursday along the A-52 motorway near Cernadilla, Zamora, about 70 miles west of Valladolid. Reports indicate the pair were traveling in a Lamborghini when a tire burst during an overtaking attempt. The vehicle lost control, rolled off the road, and erupted in flames.

Emergency responders from the Castilla y León region confirmed the accident and the deaths at about 12:35 AM. According to the region’s 1-1-2 emergency operations center, multiple distress calls were received regarding a burning car involved in a serious crash. Unfortunately, both Jota and his brother were pronounced dead at the scene.

The news has sent shockwaves across the football world, especially as it comes just two weeks after Jota’s wedding to his longtime partner Rute Cardoso. The couple, who have three young children, recently shared photos of their joyful celebration in Porto — now tragically followed by deep grief.

Jota was a key player for Liverpool FC and the Portuguese national team, having earned nearly 50 caps for his country. In a heartfelt statement, Pedro Proença, President of the Portuguese Football Federation, confirmed the deaths and described Jota as both an “amazing player” and a “beacon of joy and community spirit.”

“The loss of Diogo and Andre Jota is a devastating blow to Portuguese football. They were not just athletes — they were role models,” Proença stated, offering condolences to the Jota family, Liverpool FC, FC Penafiel, and fans worldwide. He also confirmed that a minute of silence would be held in their honor ahead of Portugal’s UEFA Women’s Championship fixture against Spain.

As tributes pour in from teammates, fans, and clubs across the globe, Diogo Jota will be remembered not just for his skill on the pitch, but for the passion, humility, and light he brought to those around him.
