The Nigerian National Assembly has officially embarked on its annual recess, with both the Senate and House of Representatives adjourning plenary sessions until Tuesday, September 23, 2025. The break gives lawmakers time to carry out oversight duties and engage directly with their constituents.
Senate Suspends Sitting for Oversight Work
The Senate adjourned following a motion moved by Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, during Thursday’s plenary. Senate President Godswill Akpabio reminded senators that the recess is not a holiday, stressing the need for effective oversight as committees are expected to submit activity reports when sessions resume. Meanwhile, APC Senators are expected at the party’s National Executive Committee meeting at the Presidential Villa later today.
House of Reps Embarks on Two-Month Break
The House of Representatives also adjourned following a unanimous decision on Wednesday. Speaker Abbas Tajudeen urged members to take advantage of the recess to return home, engage constituents, address pressing local issues, and monitor federal projects in their areas.
This legislative break is part of the National Assembly’s yearly schedule, designed to balance national duties with constituency responsibilities.
