Nurses Begin Warning Strike Over Poor Welfare Conditions

Nurses working in federal health institutions across the country have commenced a seven-day warning strike starting from midnight, Tuesday, July 30, 2025. The action is led by the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives – Federal Health Institutions Sector (NANNM-FHI), following the expiration of a 15-day ultimatum issued on July 14.

The union is demanding improved welfare, better working conditions, and fair allowances. According to the National Chairman of NANNM-FHI, Morakinyo Rilwan, the Federal Government failed to open meaningful discussions during the notice period.

“As far as we are concerned, there has been no communication from the government. That is why the strike is going ahead. Even if they call today or tomorrow, it won’t stop anything. They had ample time to act,” he stated.

Key Demands of the Nurses:

Upward review of shift allowances

Adjustment of uniform allowances

A separate salary structure for nurses

Enhanced core duty allowances

Recruitment of more nurses

Establishment of a dedicated Nursing Department within the Federal Ministry of Health

Rilwan noted that the strike is a reflection of long-standing frustration among nurses who feel neglected and underpaid. “For over 40 years, we’ve endured poor working conditions without striking. But enough is enough,” he said, adding that members are not deterred by the threat of the ‘no work, no pay’ policy.

What Happens Next?

The warning strike will last until August 5, 2025. However, if the Federal Government fails to respond meaningfully, NANNM-FHI says it will issue a new 21-day ultimatum, which could lead to an indefinite nationwide strike.

Clarifying the scope of the action, Rilwan said only institutions not financially under the NANNM-FHI, such as the Federal Medical Centre in Ebute-Metta and Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), are exempt. “All other federal hospitals, including those in Lagos, the FCT, and across the states, are fully participating,” he confirmed.
