Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially thrown his hat back into the ring for the 2027 presidential election, pledging to serve only one term and to tackle Nigeria’s toughest challenges head-on.
Obi made the declaration during a live X Spaces session on Sunday night, where he assured Nigerians of his commitment to swift reforms and national stability. He promised to stabilize the country within two years if elected and said his campaign would be focused on security, education, poverty reduction, and restoring trust in governance.
“If the coalition is not about stopping the killings in Benue, Zamfara, how to revive our economy, how to put food on the table… count me out,” Obi said passionately. He made it clear he’s open to forming alliances, but only those rooted in solving Nigeria’s real problems.
He also ruled out any joint ticket with Atiku Abubakar, saying through his media aide, Ibrahim Umar, that the idea is not on the table.
The former Anambra governor criticized what he described as misplaced priorities by the current administration, referencing President Bola Tinubu’s reported 10-day trip to St. Lucia. “Imagine—people are dying in Benue and Borno, and our leaders are commissioning bus stops and holidaying,” he said.
Obi didn’t shy away from Labour Party’s internal wranglings either. He confirmed moves to get INEC’s recognition for the Nenadi Usman-led faction, in line with a recent Supreme Court ruling.
On political rotation, he reaffirmed his belief in zoning, noting that he practiced it during his time as governor. “I believe in rotation between North and South,” he added.
Looking ahead to the 2027 polls, Obi promised a non-violent and transparent election campaign, saying, “We’ll insist the right thing is done before the results are announced. Our votes will count.”
He also pledged to curb defections, stating that any elected official who wins under a party should remain there for the duration of their term.
Calling for a new kind of leadership, Obi declared, “Anybody who wants to serve should be ready to put their life on the line for Nigerians. No serious country is taken seriously without a stable government.”
With a strong message of hope, action, and reform, Peter Obi is once again positioning himself as a frontrunner—this time with a bolder promise and a shorter timeline.
