The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice-Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, has called on traditional rulers across the state to actively protect public infrastructure and government assets within their domains.
Delivering his message at the 121st and 122nd Combined Quarterly General Meeting of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers held in Port Harcourt, Vice-Admiral Ibas—represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibibia Lucky Worika—described traditional leaders as frontline custodians of peace, heritage, and security.
“Recall that on my assumption of office as the Administrator of Rivers State, I engaged with you at the Government House as part of my consultation with critical stakeholders with the sole aim of maintaining peace, law and order in our dear state,” he said.
Quoting the African proverb, “When the roots of a tree begin to decay, it spreads death to the branches,” the Administrator emphasized the pivotal role of traditional institutions in community stability.
“You, our revered traditional rulers, are the roots—custodians of culture, guardians of heritage, and stabilizers of society. You must take deliberate steps to secure government facilities in your communities to guard against theft and vandalism,” he charged.
Vice-Admiral Ibas acknowledged the growing challenges facing communities—ranging from security and social issues to economic difficulties—and urged traditional leaders to stand united.
“Rain does not fall on one roof alone. We must rise together, support one another, and speak with one voice for the good of our people,” he added, calling for collective responsibility and renewed commitment to public good.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to partner with the traditional institution on initiatives for development, warning, however, that any ruler found to be linked with threats to peace would not be protected by the government.
In response, the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, His Majesty Eze Chike Amadi Worlu-Wodo, Eze Oha Apara (IV) of Apara Kingdom, expressed gratitude to the Administrator for his presence and dedication to peace and progress in the state.
