The Rivers State Police Command has made a major breakthrough in its fight against human trafficking, arresting two suspects linked to a child trafficking ring and rescuing a pregnant woman who later gave birth while under protective custody.
The Command’s spokesperson, Superintendent of Police (SP) Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed this in a press statement issued on July 21, 2025. She revealed that the arrests were made following a coordinated operation on June 24, when detectives extended their investigations to Aba in Abia State.
According to SP Iringe-Koko, two suspects—28-year-old Sunshine Hart and 38-year-old Kingsley Ekocha—were apprehended during the raid. A 24-year-old woman, Regina Sunday, who was heavily pregnant at the time, was also rescued from the grip of the alleged traffickers and immediately placed under protective custody.
She went on to explain that on June 30, while still in custody, Regina went into labour and was rushed to the Police Clinic in Port Harcourt. There, she safely delivered a healthy baby boy. Both mother and child are reportedly in stable condition and receiving the necessary medical attention.
The police spokesperson stated that investigations into the case are ongoing, with efforts focused on uncovering and apprehending other members of the criminal network. She reiterated the Command’s resolve to dismantle trafficking operations across the state and bring all those involved to justice.
The PPRO emphasized that the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, remains committed to safeguarding lives and ensuring justice is served. SP Iringe-Koko added that the Commissioner urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity related to human trafficking, assuring that all information provided will be treated with utmost confidentiality.
