The Super Falcons of Nigeria have booked their place in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final after a thrilling 2-1 semi-final victory over rivals South Africa. The intense clash, played on Tuesday in Morocco, delivered high drama and unforgettable moments.
With the game seemingly heading into extra time, defender Michelle Alozie became the unexpected match-winner, scoring a stunning 94th-minute goal. Her deep cross into the box floated past everyone—including the South African goalkeeper—and found the back of the net, sparking wild celebrations on the Nigerian bench.
The Falcons started strong and kept the pressure on Banyana Banyana early on, but the South Africans held firm until the 44th minute. Nigeria’s captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, stepped up to convert a well-earned penalty after a handball in the box.
South Africa responded with intensity in the second half and were rewarded with a penalty of their own in the 56th minute, which Linda Motlhalo buried to draw level.
Both sides pushed hard for a winner, but just when it looked like extra time was inevitable, Alozie struck with a last-gasp effort—assisted by Esther Okoronkwo—to seal the win for Nigeria.
With this victory, the Super Falcons remain on course to claim a record-extending 10th WAFCON title. They now await the winner of the other semi-final between hosts Morocco and Ghana.
