An Air Peace aircraft, Flight P47190 en route from Lagos, experienced a runway excursion upon landing at Port Harcourt International Airport on Sunday morning, marking the second such incident for the airline in 2025. The mishap, captured in a striking image showing the aircraft tilted off the runway and it has raised fresh questions about aviation safety in Nigeria’s largest carrier.
The incident occurred around 9:59 AM WAT, as reported with the plane veering into the grassy verge, its nose dipping slightly as passengers disembarked via an emergency chute. No casualties were reported, a relief echoed by social media users who credited the pilot’s skill and expressed gratitude for the safe outcome. However, the recurring nature of such incidents has sparked calls for a thorough investigation.
This is the second runway-related incident for Air Peace this year, following a May 11 collision with an antelope at Asaba International Airport. Runway excursions, which account for 54.7% of runway safety accidents according to the Aviation Safety Network (ASN) database, are often attributed to crew handling errors or adverse weather conditions. Port Harcourt’s tropical monsoon climate, characterized by heavy rainfall, may have played a role, a factor supported by ForeFlight’s emphasis on real-time runway condition analysis to mitigate risks in such environments.
