Tinubu Opens National Sports Festival in Ogun, Calls for Sportsmanship

President Bola Tinubu officially launched the 22nd National Sports Festival, “Gateway Games 2024,” in a vibrant ceremony held at the MKO Abiola International Stadium. Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Tinubu urged the over 10,000 participating athletes to compete with integrity and in the true spirit of sportsmanship.

The grand opening was attended by notable figures including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, and Governors Charles Soludo (Anambra), Abiodun Oyebamiji (Osun), and Ademola Adeleke (Ekiti). Other dignitaries included Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission, and former governors Olusegun Osoba and Gbenga Daniel.

Tinubu emphasized the unifying power of sports, stating, “Nothing unites the country like sport.” He highlighted the government’s commitment to sports development through the establishment of an autonomous National Sports Commission, free from political interference. “We want it to thrive, autonomous, innovative, and focused because we recognize its critical role in making the nation healthier, stronger, and more united Nigeria,” he said.

Governor Dapo Abiodun described the opening ceremony as “world-class” and a testament to Ogun State’s dedication to national progress. He stressed that hosting the festival, which runs from May 16 to 30, 2024, is a significant honor and reflects the state’s commitment to national development.

Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, praised Ogun State for its willingness to host the event, highlighting its role in celebrating Nigeria’s diversity and unity. He also commended President Tinubu for his visionary leadership in restructuring sports administration.
A key highlight of the festival is the introduction of Invited Junior Athletes (IJA), showcasing the government’s focus on nurturing young talent. Bukola Olopade, Director-General of the NSC, expressed confidence that the “Gateway Games 2024” will be the best in the festival’s history, promising the discovery and development of future champions. He also lauded Governor Abiodun’s unwavering support for the event’s success.
