Wike Slams Amaechi Over “Hungry” Remark, Alleges Power Obsession

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has fired back at former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, over his recent “I’m hungry” comment, accusing him of craving power—not food.

Wike, speaking during a media parley in Abuja on Monday, said Amaechi’s remark during his 60th birthday celebration was disingenuous.

“We’re all hungry,” Amaechi had said. “If you’re not hungry, I am. For us in the opposition, if you want us to remove the man in power, we can remove him.” He also criticised the political class for focusing more on sharing resources than driving economic ideas.

Wike dismissed the statement as “nonsense,” questioning why someone who had held power consistently from 1999 to 2023 would now speak of hunger.

“He was Speaker, Governor, Minister—did he ever complain of hunger? His hunger is not for food, it is for power,” Wike stated.

He accused Amaechi of regrouping with former allies in a bid to return to relevance and said such political desperation shows “failure.”

The FCT Minister also questioned Amaechi’s threat to “remove” the current administration, asking if it implied a coup. “I’m not a liability,” Wike added. “I am an asset to President Tinubu’s second term.”

The two former Rivers governors have been bitter rivals for years, each wielding significant political influence in the state and beyond.
